I am giving my second webinar (yay!) at Verizon next week and I really liked the topic I chose. I wanted to get to the bottom of the meaning behind a healthy lifestyle. The last webinar I did was on carbohydrates and I got some positive feedback on that one so I was excited when I was asked if I wanted to give another one! So I finished all the work for it and I decided I wanted to share on here some of the common health myths that people tend to believe.
For the past few months I have been so negative (gross I know) about my major. Thinking thoughts like “I will never find a job” or “my degree isn’t good for anything.” BUT GUESS WHAT GUYS! Wellness jobs are out there and I’ve realized that is something I want to explore before I try extra schooling. Since Monday, I have put in close to 20 job applications for when I graduate… crazy right? I graduate college in less than 2 months.
So anyways, let’s talk about the fun stuff! If I asked you what a healthy life entails, I am sure that “fitness” and “nutrition” would come to mind first, right? Well, those are two big parts, but not the only parts. We tend to forge that our mind and our spirit also affect our overall wellness. I believe that there shouldn’t be such strict standards for healthy. Why? Because everyone is different! What I need to change about myself to be healthier and what you need to change may be two totally different changes! Being healthy means that your mind AND your body are happy and properly taken care of. It’s hard to put a specific definition on “happy and taken care of.” If I asked what you could do to be healthier, what would you say? Get more sleep? Eat more vegetables? Meditate more?
Here are 9 common health MYTHS that the general public tend to think.
“I can only eat fruits and vegetables and that is boring”
Balance and moderation
As I mentioned earlier, being healthy is different for everyone. What I need to do to be healthier may be different from what you need to do. Does everyone need to eat fruits and vegetables? Yes, but that doesn’t mean they need to be your only snack! You also need to keep a healthy balance with the other food groups and yes- your ‘soul’ food. Whatever foods make you happy should be eaten in moderation. Learning the art of balance and moderation will change your entire life. Also- you can do SO MUCH with fruits and vegetables. You don’t need to eat them raw! You can cook them and hide them in your meals. Yes – hide them! Have you ever heard of an apple pie made with zucchini instead of apples? Try it. It will change your life.
“I hate running so I don’t do cardio”
There are plenty of other options
Running isn’t for everyone- I understand that. But, running isn’t the only way to get cardio in. Walking, biking, swimming, or playing a sport are other options. There are so many variations that you have for you, and most being free or very low cost. Finding something that makes you happy and makes you have fun is WORTH IT! It will pass the time by quicker and you will find exercising more enjoyable.
‘I don’t have time”
YOU should be your first priority – it is 4% of your day!
A 1 hour workout is 4% of your day. Try something new like high intensity interval training or tabata workouts. If you don’t know what these are or you need help understand them, ASK! Send me an email. I would be more than happy to explain it.
Anyways - Your health is your number one priority. If I were to ask you what your top three priorities are, you would probably say- your family, friends, and work or something along those lines. But when you look at it in a different perspective, it makes more sense. Think of it like this- if you aren’t healthy, you can’t take care of your family, keep relationships with friends, or keep a steady job. You need to look at it in a way that when it comes to your health- it is okay to be selfish.
“Weight lifting will make me too bulky”
The general recommendation won’t do that.
This is a big myth that most women tend to believe. “Bulking up” in the sense that most women are thinking when they think about weight lifting… is not done strictly by weight lifting. The weight lifting I am talking that you should be doing is hitting the major muscle groups 2-3x per week. You don’t need to take supplements or drink protein shakes and do crazy lifts everyday of the week. The amount of resistance training that is recommended is not enough to make you look “bulky”, but it is enough to make your muscles and bones stronger!
“I don’t have the motivation”
They often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it DAILY.
I’m going to be honest; I don’t have motivation some days. It’s impossible to be perfect and have everything together all the time. Motivation isn’t something you just pull out and use it when you need it. Motivation is something you practice every single day. How do you get better at something? You practice it. Finding ways to stay motivated everyday is necessary.
“I won’t be healthy until I lose weight again”
Mind – body – spirit
The word ‘healthy’ is different from the word ‘fit’ and I think people tend to confuse these two words pretty often. It’s not about being ‘fit’. It is 100% possible to begin your healthy journey while being overweight. Being healthy is about having a positive state of mind, fueling your body with nutrients it can utilize and working to better yourself everyday! Fit entails being healthy BECAUSE of regular exercise, not because of all the other components that comes with health!
“I have to go to the gym to workout and I can’t afford it”
Can you afford fresh air?
There are so many ways to get exercise. One of the easiest? Shoot me an email and I will set up some time to either show you an at home workout or make you one and send it to you! There are also options like hiking, walks around your neighborhood, utilizing the stairs in your house, local parks, going to a city or mall and walking around. Fitness doesn’t have to be a structured 1-2 hours at the gym. Anything that gets your heart rate up will do!
“I can’t do it all… so what is the point of even trying?”
No one can do it all… that’s why we do what we can
If we could everything and be great at it… what would be the point in trying new things? How would we make progress? You aren’t going to be the best right away. The best example I have for this is- for those of you who know me, know that I recently just completed an internship at a crossfit gym. I have never done crossfit before in my life so I had to do the workouts to understand the workouts. The first day I was there… I was so embarrassed. I couldn’t lift as much as the other women there and I didn’t know how to do some of the stuff, which made me even more self-conscious! I finally closed my eyes on my water break and snapped out of it. I told myself that I have to start somewhere just like everyone else in this gym did! The rest of the workout was great once I decided to let the fear of starting something new be released. Start today. Ask for help. Don’t put off a better life because you are scared.
“The results won’t come quick enough and I need it now”
The best things in life are worth waiting for
Everything that is worth having is worth the wait and effort. And I am going to let you in on a little secret. The more positive your outlook is- the quicker you will see results. Now that doesn’t mean you still all of a sudden drop 20 pounds… but it means that you will see yourself, your life, and everyone around you in a new light. Having a positive outlook helps you see that things are possible and it makes the journey more fun.
Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t a temporary thing so you can learn to lose weight. This is a lifestyle change that will literally change your entire life. Deciding to be connected to myself mind, body, and spirit is the best decision that I have ever made.
This presentation I made was 10x bigger but this is all I can fit in one post… so there will probably be a follow up post coming soon! Hope you learned something and if you have any questions – you know where to find me!
